Dr. Samar Sarmini

Dr. Sarmini came from Lebanon and has been living in greater New Orleans for over two decades.  Dr. Sarmini received both M.Ed. and Ph.D. from the University of New Orleans in Curriculum & Instruction with a focus on teaching high school mathematics.  Her interest and dissertation focused on exploring the effect of language on bilingual students’ performance in solving mathematical word problems in their first and second languages.  Dr. Sarmini has been teaching Mathematics part time at Loyola since 2010.  She has recently joined the full-time staff and is in charge of providing support for students in introductory mathematics courses and statistics.

Dr. Sarmini has given several presentations on different aspects of teaching mathematics at the Greater New Orleans Teachers of Mathematics Annual Conferences:  “Systems of Linear Equations in Multiple Representations,” “Using Egg Cartons to Distinguish Between Fractions and Ratios,” “Interpreting Remainders for Real-Life Division Problems,” “Trigonometry, A Different Approach,” and “Using Graphing Calculator to Understand Functions”.
